How to Make Your Own Boxes for Wedding Favors

Your wedding is coming up, and you’re still lost for favor ideas. Making your own favors can save money and add a personal touch your guests will appreciate. Homemade favors also make nice keepsakes from your wedding. Paper boxes are a classic wedding favor that can be decorated however you choose and filled with smaller wedding favor items. All you need is a box template and some skill with scissors and glue.

Things You’ll Need:

• Box template
• Card stock
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Adhesive
• Selected decorations

1. Download a box favor pattern online, such as Martha Stewart Weddings, Style Me Pretty Bridal Inspirations and Package Tech.com. You may also find them in bridal magazines or books. Look for a pattern 8½ by 11 inches, which is a standard party favor box size.

2.Trace the template onto the paper of your choice. Simple white or colored card stock always works well. If you are deconstructing a box to use as a template carefully lift any tape holding the box together with a pair of scissors and unfold the box based on the box’s creases, tabs and folds. Be careful not to rip any sides of the box.

3. Cut out the paper and mark where to make folds and cuts in the box as per template instructions. Fold the box from the marks you made and create slits in the paper based on where you marked it.

4. Apply adhesive to secure the box sides to one another. Allow to dry.

5. Decorate box as desired. Decorations can be based on shared hobbies and experiences of you and your fiance, the wedding’s theme and mood of your reception (formal dinner, casual beach wedding). Weddings that fall around a holiday (Christmas, Valentine’s Day) can also be used for inspiration. Ideas for decorations include wedding-themed paper glued to the box, dried flowers, hearts and ribbons.

6. Fill the boxes with desired favors such as hard candy, chocolates, gift cards and personalized note cards.
