Ideas for Packing Gifts

  • Sometimes the packaging and delivery of a gift itself can set the stage for the receiving of the actual gift, adding to the experience. It is also important to properly package a gift so that it does not break or get destroyed in route to the person who is supposed to receive it. There are a number of different ways to do this so that receiving and opening the gift is a memorable experience.
  • Bubble Wrap, Pillows and Box

  • For gifts that you are shipping a long distance, the most important thing to focus on is that the gift arrives in one piece. As the most inexpensive way to ship a gift with any heft or weight to it is by ground transportation, this means the package will change hands numerous times and run a much larger risk of being thrown, dropped or crushed in route to its destination. So, use the money you have saved sending the gift by ground to add to the packaging. Wrap the gift in bubble wrap a couple times, add plastic foam peanuts to the package or balled-up pieces of newspaper and tape everything up in a box so that it is solid, padded and secure.
  • Many Gifts per Package

  • By packaging many gifts together into one package, like all of the Christmas or Hanukkah gifts for an entire family,  you can save money and send a large trove of gifts at once. Individually package each gift, and then bind them together with twine or rope before inserting them into a larger box. Insert padding into this larger box so that all of the gifts that you tie together can’t come apart and rattle around in the box during shipment, possibly damaging them. Include a key to the package so that people know which gifts are for whom and when they should open them, among other special notes or instructions.
  • Little Gift in Big Package

  • A fun, sometimes funny trick that you can play on someone you are shipping a package to is to give them a small, wrapped present and then ship it in a very large box. Wrap the smaller present, and then tape it to the bottom of the package. Then, fill the package with padding like balled-up newspaper or plastic foam peanuts, and pack it well so that it completely fills the larger box. This will pad the smaller gift and cause the person receiving the package to have to sift through all the packaging to actually find her present, which will be funny for her and worth the work before she finds the real gift.
